CHARLES HOWESON

Charles, at the age of 65, is effectively now well into a third career.

First Career

Initially he served for nearly 25 years in the Royal Navy at home, overseas and afloat, which included secondment to other national governments. This involved world wide travel and setting up house abroad on three occasions. He left the service at the age of 39 from the post of Chief of the Allied Staff in Gibraltar for a full time commercial career with the aim of being able to provide his wife and children with additional domestic stability at their family home in Plymouth.

Second Career

His second career in business kicked off with re-training in the environmental area and this was followed by a number of progressively challenging management roles including having responsibility for putting together strategic multi-sector partnerships in conditions that were often hostile to the achievement of consensus. In the mid 90’s and having served as the Group Managing Director of the management arm of a large firm of multi-disciplinary chartered surveyors, he set up on his own, first establishing a successful property development company, followed by founding a retailing, wholesaling warehousing and distribution company group that went on to become a significant retained contractor to the Government.

Third Career (Current)

By 1997 these successful enterprises (and several others) were largely running themselves and so Charles was able to take up invitations to fulfil non-executive roles in different areas of the private sector as well as having the time to make a direct contribution to urban regeneration, Regional economic development and National industry and infrastructure performance through an increasing range of public service appointments in the voluntary, community, and ‘not for profit’ sectors. In all these roles, (where he is often asked to take a formal stance on behalf of consumers) Charles maintains a strictly non party political stance.
